Tanks & Lines [Nitrogen Gas fire/explosion suppression system]
LEAKAGE, Uneven use of nitrogen in one bank of 4-bank system, 4 bottles of 250 cubic feet per bottle, at 2500 lbs. of pressure comprise a bank. Nitrogen as an inert gas is used to displace oxygen in the fuel storage and delivery lines to guided missiles, effectively preventing ignition of the fuel. Three banks used less than 1 bottle per month; one bank used 4 bottles per week.
Using the CTRL UL101 the mechanic found leaks throughout the system. Most leaks were minute and were discovered easily. Some of the smallest were not identified by a previous soap solution test. However the major leak was found in a 200-foot line buried two feet underground. The line was marked and pressurized to 200psi.The mechanic clearly heard the muffled sound of the problem by tracing the line. When exposed the leak had occurred in a union. A scan of the components and careful adjustment of the device to suit operating conditions allowed detection of an expensive problem.
Operating expense was lowered significantly. The savings in nitrogen gas were $6800 per year. Further savings are anticipated in the inspection of other systems. Our device paid for itself in one day.
