Ultrasonic Inspection: Bearings

Types of Bearings

There are many types of Bearings including ball, linear, jewel, babbitt, ceramic, magnetic, and many more. The most common type of bearing is the ball bearing, which is used to minimize friction caused by rotary equipment. There are two main types including radial (deep groove and angular contact) and thrust ball bearings. Radial ball bearings are designed to carry both radial and axial (thrust) loads, while thrust ball bearings carry only axial loads.

Another familiar and commonly used bearing is the roller bearing, which replaces a high-friction sliding motion with a low-friction rolling motion. Three main types include cylindrical, spherical, and tapered. Roller bearings are normally made of alloy or low-carbon steels. Some, more expensive roller bearings are made of high-carbon steel, depending upon the application requirements. To select roller bearings, it is necessary to consider the life expectancy and consider the basic dynamic load rating to meet that life requirement.
